Interactive Session with 205 Local Government Chairpersons

ACC held interactive session with Local Government Chairpersons on 18 January 2017 during their 9th conference held in Phuentsholing from 15 to 18 January 2017. The conference themed ”Towards Greater Decentralization and Participatory Governance” was an ideal platform for the ACC to garner support of the Local Government functionaries in enhancing transparency, accountability and integrity to prevent corruption and improve public service delivery. It was indeed an opportunity for ACC to interact with the newly elected local leaders and exchange perspectives in terms of advancing the national agenda of reducing corruption.

ACC receives maximum complaints against the Local Government which could be attributed to greater devolution of powers, responsibilities and resources to the local level. Local governments are also more susceptible to corruption as they interface with the citizens for development programs and service delivery.

The participants raised number of pertinent questions and expressed that such session is enriching and eye-opening particularly for newly elected local leaders. They also expressed their appreciation for ACC’s effort. Further, they said such sessions are of immense help to develop the sense of intolerance and resistance to corruption given their critical mandate in fulfilling the national goals and objectives at the grass root level.
